We hope the month of February finds you well. For those of you who enjoy the snowy weather, it seems as though it has finally arrived. Also, please read to the end for big news!

Outdoor Winter Fun

Now that some snow has accumulated and colder temperatures are here, we wanted to share some of the fabulous outdoor activities available in our area.

-The Elora Cataract Trail (http://trailway.org/) is located along the former Credit Valley Railway line. The trail is 47 kilometres long, running from Fergus along the top of the Shand Dam to the Belwood Lake Conservation Area. The Elora-Fergus loop of the trailway provides a 9-kilometre hike, ski or snowshoe with beautiful views of the Grand River. The Wellington County Museum and Archives (http://www.wellington.ca/en/museum.asp) can be found along the trail between the two towns. The Museum hosts a great toboggan hill, as well as an outdoor ice rink (weather dependent)

-Belwood Lake Conservation Area is open through winter and offers hiking on over 3 kms of trails, when conditions are safe (https://www.grandriver.ca/en/outdoor-recreation/Belwood-Lake.aspx#gsc.tab=0)

-Ice Fishing at Belwood Lake is excellent for perch and northern pike. Check the GRCA’s Newsroom for winter condition updates (http://www.grandriver.ca/NewsRoom/News.cfm)

-The Fergus Elora Belwood Snowmobile Club maintains 150 kilometres of trails. They have a heated clubhouse where you can enjoy lunch, shelter, and the company of other snowmobilers. Check out their Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/161395970550327/

-Snowshoeing can be enjoyed on numerous trails throughout our area, at the Museum grounds, or at a local Conservation Area

-When the weather cooperates, you can find outdoor skating rinks in Fergus, Elora and Belwood. These rinks are maintained by volunteers in our community and we appreciate the time and effort involved in creating these wonderful spaces for all to enjoy! Bank of Canada Update

As expected, the Bank of Canada has left its key lending rate unchanged at 5.00%, and hinted that its tightening cycle might have peaked. The Bank of Canada has been raising the cost of borrowing since March 2022 in an effort to tamp down inflation, which has declined sharply from highs of 8.1%. Annual inflation ticked up to 3.4% in December from 3.1% the month previous, however, economists have pointed to slowing elsewhere in the economy as likely to tame price pressures. As a result of this January 24th decision, prime rate will remain unchanged at 7.20% and there will be no changes to existing variable-rate mortgages. This announcement also has no impact on fixed-rate mortgage holders. The Bank’s next announcement will take place on March 6th.
